Tesla is getting ready to turn the page on two of its most iconic vehicles. The company has confirmed that production of the Model S and Model X will end by mid-2026, with the final production phase expected to conclude in the second quarter of 2026. While the decision marks the end of an era for Tesla’s original flagship models, it also signals where the company believes its future truly lies.

According to CEO Elon Musk, the move is part of a larger shift in focus toward artificial intelligence and robotics. Tesla plans to repurpose sections of its Fremont factory to support large-scale manufacturing of the Optimus humanoid robot. Musk has repeatedly described Optimus as one of Tesla’s most important long-term projects, and the factory space currently used for the Model S and X is now seen as better suited for building robots rather than low-volume luxury vehicles.

The Model S and Model X have played a defining role in Tesla’s rise. The Model S helped prove that electric cars could be fast, desirable, and practical, while the Model X stood out with its bold design and falcon-wing doors. However, both models sell in far smaller numbers compared to the Model 3 and Model Y, which will continue production along with the Cybertruck.

Tesla has reassured customers that ending production does not mean abandoning existing owners. The company says software updates, servicing, and spare parts support will continue for years to come.

No direct replacements for the Model S have been announced, suggesting Tesla is streamlining its lineup to focus on products aligned with its future vision. While some fans may see this as a bittersweet moment, the message is clear: Tesla is betting that its next big leap forward won’t just be on the road—but walking alongside us.
