Every Small Car That Could Benefit from CAFE 3 Norms

November 24, 2025

The Indian government’s proposed CAFE-3 (Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency) norms will enforce stricter CO₂ limits for all M1-category passenger vehicles. However, a key draft clause offers relief to small cars under 4 metres, with engines up to 1200cc and kerb weight below 909kg. Manufacturers can claim a CO₂ reduction of up to 3g/km per vehicle (capped at 9g/km), helping them meet fleet emission targets more easily.

If implemented as drafted, several small cars—mostly from Maruti Suzuki—stand to benefit significantly.

1. Maruti Suzuki S-Presso

Length: 3.56m | Engine: 998cc | Kerb weight: 736–775kg
The most affordable car in India after the GST cut, the S-Presso meets all exemption criteria. Powered by a 1.0L petrol engine and priced between Rs 3.50–5.25 lakh, it becomes a strong CAFE compliance tool for Maruti.

2. Maruti Suzuki Alto K10

Length: 3.53m | Engine: 998cc | Kerb weight: 730–754kg
The lightest car on the list, the Alto K10 uses the same engine as the S-Presso. With prices from Rs 3.70–5.45 lakh, it offers high efficiency and easy compliance under the proposed norms.

3. Renault Kwid

Length: 3.73m | Engine: 999cc | Kerb weight: 732–782kg
The only non-Maruti model eligible for CAFE relaxation. The Kwid’s 1.0L petrol setup and sub-4m footprint make it compliant. Prices: Rs 4.30–5.99 lakh.

4. Maruti Suzuki Celerio

Length: 3.69m | Engine: 998cc | Kerb weight: 810–835kg
Among India’s most fuel-efficient cars (up to 26kpl claimed), the Celerio fits the proposed CAFE category perfectly. Priced Rs 4.70–6.73 lakh.

5. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R

Length: 3.65m | Engine: 998cc / 1197cc | Kerb weight: 825–860kg
A bestseller and a major contributor to Maruti’s volumes, the Wagon R also qualifies for CAFE-3 benefits. Both its engine options fall under the 1200cc limit. Prices: Rs 4.99–6.95 lakh.

6. Maruti Suzuki Ignis

Length: 3.70m | Engine: 1197cc | Kerb weight: 840–865kg
The only Nexa car eligible. Powered by an 83hp 1.2L petrol engine, the Ignis fits all criteria and stands to gain emission credits. Priced Rs 5.35–7.55 lakh.
