Tata Motors is evaluating the introduction of CNG and strong hybrid powertrains for its vehicles measuring over 4 metres in length, as reported by Autocar Professional. Currently, Tata offers CNG only in its smaller models—the Tiago, Tigor, Punch, and Nexon—while hybrids are absent from its entire lineup. The larger vehicles, including the Curvv, Harrier, Safari, and the upcoming Sierra, may now be next in line to receive these options.
Growing CNG Demand and Tata’s Strategy
Tata sold over 1.2 lakh CNG cars in 2024, with volumes expected to reach 1.5 lakh units by the end of this year. The shift in powertrain strategy comes ahead of the stringent CAFE 3 norms planned for 2027. Rising petrol prices and reduced preference for diesel have also pushed customers toward alternative fuel options.
Industry data from FY2025 shows:
- CNG: 35% growth
- Hybrid: 15.4% growth
- Electric: 15% growth
These trends reinforce Tata’s need to diversify its powertrain offerings in the mainstream segments.

CNG & Hybrid Plans Under Evaluation
All Tata models above 4 metres—split into the over 4.3m category (Curvv and soon, Sierra) and over 4.6m category (Harrier and Safari)—are SUVs. Speaking at Tata’s Q2 FY26 earnings call, Shailesh Chandra, MD of Tata Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, stated:
“We are… very closely watching the 4.3-metre segment. If we see demand there, we might extend our portfolio of CNG offerings in that segment as well.”
While firm details aren’t confirmed yet, the Tata Curvv is a strong candidate for a CNG variant. Since it shares its 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine with the Nexon, it could potentially adopt the compact SUV’s innovative twin-cylinder CNG setup. Tata is currently the only manufacturer offering turbo-petrol + CNG in the market.
