Volvo is quietly working on what could become its largest and most ambitious SUV yet. The Swedish automaker is exploring a new three-row flagship that would rival luxury heavyweights like the BMW X7 and Mercedes-Benz GLS. While the project is still in its early planning stages, executives note a growing demand for bigger Hybrid SUV, particularly in markets such as the United States and China, where buyers are seeking spacious, premium vehicles.
Currently, Volvo’s biggest model is the XC90, a well-regarded seven-seat Hybrid SUV that has long served as the brand’s flagship. However, with competitors offering even larger vehicles packed with space and luxury features, Volvo is considering a model that sits above the XC90, targeting the F-segment of full-size hybrid SUVs. This move could give the brand a stronger footing in the high-end SUV market.
Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson has confirmed that the company is studying the feasibility of this new SUV, though no final production decision has been made. If it goes ahead, the vehicle is expected to feature a hybrid powertrain rather than a fully electric setup, balancing performance with everyday usability and driving range. The design may build on Volvo’s current scalable platforms used for the XC90 and EX90, or it could incorporate technology from Volvo’s parent group, Geely, leveraging their premium vehicle architecture.
Industry experts suggest that such a model could elevate Volvo’s presence in the luxury SUV segment, attracting customers who currently turn to long-established competitors for three-row options. For now, the company is carefully gauging interest and refining the concept, with full-scale production possibly targeted for the latter half of this decade.
