Maruti Suzuki, India’s largest carmaker, is finally stepping into the electric vehicle arena with the launch of its first mass-market EV – the Maruti e Vitara. After years of anticipation and a showcase at the 2025 Bharat Mobility Global Expo, the electric SUV is set to debut tomorrow. Despite carrying the familiar “Vitara” badge, this is not an electrified version of the Grand Vitara but an entirely new product built from the ground up as an EV. Ahead of its price announcement, there are several key aspects that prospective buyers should understand.
The e Vitara’s exterior makes it instantly clear that this is a fresh design direction for Maruti Suzuki. Unlike the Grand Vitara, the electric SUV adopts a more rugged and futuristic stance with a noticeably chunkier bumper, sharp character lines, and a muscular overall posture. The front fascia is dominated by Y-shaped LED DRLs and slim headlamps that give the SUV a distinctive identity. Along the sides, the e Vitara’s bold wheel arches, thick body cladding, and 18-inch dual-tone aerodynamic alloy wheels reinforce its tough, adventure-ready styling. At the rear, wraparound LED tail-lamps mirror the Y-shaped signature seen up front, while a rugged bumper and sculpted tailgate complete the SUV’s bold look.
Inside the cabin, the e Vitara introduces a design unlike anything seen before in Maruti’s lineup. The dashboard showcases a completely new layout finished in a dual-tone black and tan theme that extends to the seats. The SUV uses a two-spoke steering wheel, generous glossy black trim, and semi-leatherette upholstery to deliver an upmarket feel. A dual-screen arrangement forms the centrepiece of the interior, helping the e Vitara stand apart from Maruti’s current ICE offerings.

The technology list is extensive and aligns with modern EV expectations. The dual-screen setup features a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system paired with a 10.1-inch fully digital driver’s display. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, along with an Infinity audio system to elevate the in-car entertainment experience. Additional features include a panoramic glass roof, wireless charging, ventilated front seats, ambient lighting, electrically adjustable and foldable ORVMs, and a PM2.5 air filter.
Safety has been given significant priority. The e Vitara offers up to seven airbags, electronic stability control, TPMS, front and rear parking sensors, an electronic parking brake with auto hold and a 360-degree camera. Importantly, the EV has already secured a four-star Euro NCAP rating. It also comes equipped with Level 2 ADAS that incorporates adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, high beam assist, autonomous emergency braking, rear cross traffic alert and blind spot alert, making it one of the most advanced safety packages in its class.
Maruti will offer the e Vitara in two powertrain configurations, based on 49kWh and 61kWh battery packs. Both versions use a single electric motor in a front-wheel-drive configuration. The 49kWh variant produces 144PS and promises a WLTP range of 344km, while the more powerful 61kWh model generates 174PS with a WLTP range of 426km. Internationally, the e Vitara is also sold in an AWD configuration, but this setup will not be available initially in India. Charging capability is flexible, with both variants supporting AC and DC fast charging. A 7kW home charger takes between 6.5 to 9 hours to replenish the battery, depending on the variant, while an 11kW AC charger reduces the time. DC fast charging allows both variants to charge from 10 to 80 percent in 45 minutes.
With expectations of a starting price of around Rs 17 lakh (ex-showroom), the e Vitara is poised to target a rapidly growing segment of electric SUVs. Once launched, it will directly rival models such as the Hyundai Creta Electric, Tata Curvv EV, Mahindra BE 6 and MG Windsor EV. Its combination of modern styling, strong feature list, flexible charging options and Maruti’s reliability-focused brand appeal should make it a compelling new entrant in India’s EV space.
